Director of Surgical Services

About The Opportunity

Schedule: Full time – Days

Job Description

  • Position Director of Surgical Services Department leads the perioperative team by focusing on safe patient care while effectively managing operations. The Director Surgical Services has 24/7 responsibility for their departments.
  • Additional Information:
  • 3 hospitals in system. 1 at Lakeview with own Leadership team.
  • They are divided between North Shore & South shore of Lake. The North shore does not work in lock step with the South. They have their own anesthesiologist group & surgeons.
  • South shore (them) more Academic. Have downtown & Lakeside campuses
  • This role is the Director of Surgical over the downtown Tulane campus
  • Downtown & Lakeside work very closely together because they are 15 minutes apart & share anesthesia. Lakeside has it’s own OR Director
  • All covered by same medical committee, subcommittee that , MES covers both hospitals exclusively
  • Requires a lot of working together in terms of scheduling, etc.
  • Downtown Campus Details
  • 227 Beds / staffing in the high 100’s, changed semi private to private rooms
  • The Downtown OR has 15 OR’s, currently staffing up to 9 on somedays, prior to COVID was staffing up to 10 room 4 Endo rooms, 2 bronch rooms within outpatient surgery base
  • They have added a hybrid OR that technically falls under the neuro service line/cath lab director manages folks in there, but if needs to flip over to surgical case then OR folks go there
  • Just opened it up in March & it is adjacent to the main OR, imperative have some control over hybrid OR
  • Vast majority of surgeons are faculty of Tulane medical school. Vast majority or non-community docs apart of medical school (faculty)
  • Service Lines Available:
  • Major service lines: neuro, urology, transplant (abdominal), do a fair amount of robotics (2 XI & SI), recently replaced a bariatric surgeon….expecting big things. Just joined 30 days ago, just getting into gyn oncology & looking to add thoracic,
  • Hospital right next door that gets trauma, UMS with LSU
  • See occasional hip fracture, get patients that come in with gunshot wounds, etc.
  • Volume:
  • Roughly 100 cases a week, down about 80% of where they were pre-covid
  • Have all clinics within 4 walls of hospital, all clinics are hospital based, very different from what most HCA hospitals have
  • Clinic volume is leading indicator of what going to be with surgeries, surgeons affiliated with university, so not incentivized to get back to clinics or hospitals
  • One thing that noticed, 10% of decline has to do with low margin surgical cases, 30 minute ophthalmology cases that don’t paid that well, that department has pretty much shut down with COVID, benefiting them because payer mix has improved, but volume has decreased with that
  • The ortho business hasn’t come back as strong with schools being closed & intramurals not being open
  • SS Managers - have manager over the surgical dept itself, one over outpatient, PAT/PACU, & vacancy for Endo manager, manager over sterile processing
  • Senior team:
  • Tom Patrias (COO)– was in Tampa for 4 years, was CEO of hospital, Orlando before that for 4 years, 4 years in Savannah market, 2.5 years now at Tulane
  • CFO – ACFO has filled that position recently
  • CEO – the CEO worked as the CEO for 7 years previously. He recently came out of retirement last Spring & became the CEO again
  • CNO has been there for almost a year, very strong leader, would want to work closely to RN leader to OR (Ruth Kain)
